Civil Rights Laws - Know Yours!

Our civil rights laws and liberties are our greatest treasure.
The United States Constitution declares and protects our rights as citizens. When these rights are violated in our lives, we realize how important it is to protect them.

Examples of some of these rights are

  • Freedom of religion (worship without risk of government punishment)
  • Freedom of speech (speak our minds without fear of government recrimination)
  • Protection from discrimination (bigotry, hatred and bias)
  • Freedom from involuntary servitude (slavery and bondage)
  • The right to due process of law

Your right to be free from discrimination

There are a number of civil rights laws created to prevent you from being discriminated against in various situations because of your race, color, national origin, sex, age, or physical or mental disability.

Often these rights become threatened during particular situations, such as discrimination and harassment

  • in the workplace
  • when applying for credit
  • in public schools and colleges
  • when buying a house or renting an apartment
  • from state and local government officials

What can you do if your civil rights have been violated?

Civil rights are enforceable rights or privileges. This means that when someone or some group obstructs these rights, it becomes a civil wrong recognized by law as grounds for a lawsuit.

In order to succeed in a civil rights lawsuit, discrimination must be proven to be intentional to be considered unlawful.

These lawsuits can involve different types of violations ranging from police misconduct to employer harassment. But be aware that for the different types of civil rights allegations, there are different protocols which must be followed in order to file charges. You may be required to file a claim with either a state or federal government agency before you can file a lawsuit.

As a widely recognized civil rights attorney, I am committed to protecting the rights of Wyoming citizens. I handle cases involving unjustified shootings, beatings, chokings, wrongful or false arrests or incarceration, improper restraint, inadequate jail supervision, unnecessary roughness or excessive force, sexual assault, and other violations of your liberties.

Federal, state and local law enforcement authorities have a responsibility to protect the safety and the rights of defendants and civilians. When they abandon that responsibility, either intentionally or negligently, I will be at your side to hold them accountable.

If you have been the victim of an abuse of power, harassment, or discrimination, sometimes the only way to adequately fight back is to take the fight to court.

Contact Wyoming civil rights attorney Fred Harrison if you believe your civil liberties have been violated.

Our practice is committed to civil rights laws. We work to obtain justice on behalf of every client. We are driven to sustain change so that civil rights violations are a thing of the past.
